A Charlotte landmark’s transformative journey

Myers Park United Methodist Church has stood as a spiritual and architectural landmark in Charlotte for nearly 100 years. A generational establishment dedicated to growing and serving its community, the church sought a community-centered space that could accommodate its robust ministry, worship and outreach programs more efficiently, provide opportunities for its youth to learn and grow, and serve its members for generations to come.

Building a generational campus in the heart of Charlotte

Spanning 85,000 square feet across five stories, the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Center of Hope serves as the anchor of all campus activities. True to its name, this new space was thoughtfully designed to offer a multitude of amenities for all: a full, multi-use gymnasium with bleacher seating up to 100 to house church sporting activities; a welcoming hospitality suite for ministry groups; a state-of-the-art assembly hall that offers space for church events like youth gatherings, small concerts and community events; a plethora of breakout spaces, classrooms and offices; a community café; and an outdoor terrace with sweeping views of uptown Charlotte.

Overcoming challenging logistics to keep the church operational

From the start, the project team faced a long list of logistical challenges – the main one being building such a large footprint on a tight site that sat so close to their existing buildings and adjacent to one of the city’s busiest intersections. The team met frequently to update logistics plans that continuously evolved to meet needs of both the church and the construction schedule, ensuring both could progress safely while keeping the rest of the campus operational with minimal disruptions to regular activities like worship services, daycare and weddings.
