Transforming an old pine tree farm into a luxury, secluded getaway

This 14,400-square-foot pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) on Charlotte Pipe & Foundry’s new Oakboro campus was part of the company’s transformational relocation of its historic Charlotte operations to a state-of-the-art, 480-acre manufacturing facility designed to support the next century of production.

Purpose built for industrial efficiency

Purpose-built to integrate with the larger foundry, this facility plays a critical role in managing byproduct material efficiently and safely within a highly active industrial environment. Elevated on a 15-foot-high concrete wall system, the structure is designed for controlled containment and streamlined material flow. A 1-foot-thick sloping slab directs sand and water to a centralized collection point, improving efficiency while minimizing handling. Sand is delivered via a conveyor system connected to the main foundry, ensuring a continuous flow of material into the building. Large overhead doors allow 18-wheelers to back directly into the space, where materials are quickly loaded and hauled away creating a seamless, end-to-end process.

A design-build approach with NUCOR

Delivered through a collaborative design-build partnership, Barringer worked closely with partners to create a custom PEMB structure engineered to support heavy equipment, including the conveyor system. This approach enabled real-time coordination and efficient decision-making, resulting in a durable, high-performance facility tailored to Charlotte Pipe’s operational needs.
